Short Story: My Deepest Fear

Today, I decided to share with you guys a very short story I wrote in 200 level for my University’s compulsory English Literature course. My lecturer gave me a ‘WOW’ for the story submitted in form of a narrative essay and I would never forget how I had swelled with pride as he complimented my writing in front of my classmates.

In fact, the script from over two years ago, is still firmly tucked some where in my latest purse (I have replaced purses several times since then). 😅😅😅Goes on to show what it meant to me. Here comes the story!

Enjoy!

“Let’s not do this anymore! Please! I can’t do this anymore,’’ I started to shake my head uncontrollably. ‘’No, no, no, no! I can’t do this anymore! Let’s not do this anymore. I just can’t. I can’t!’’ I could still feel the whole of my body shaking. I shut my misty eyes tight now, not willing to hear anymore.

“You have beautiful fingernails.’’ Those were the first words Obinna ever said to me. We were both freshmen and he was attending a class of the course that he took from my department. I had lackadaisically turned away from the pot-bellied lecturer to take a casual look at the one who found my ugly nails beautiful. But instead, I found myself wondering if I had ever in my whole life seen any eyes as beautiful as his. Not only did those eyes cease my breath momentarily, they also eventually made me fall deeply in love for the first time.

“Funmike,’’ Obinna began again in the tenderest voice. I looked up at the starless sky now as the cool night breeze toyed with the hem of my pink chiffon gown. I didn’t want to look into those hypnotizing eyes that were now full of hurt like that of a wounded puppy’s.

“Please, I beg you. Calm down. I know you are scared because we are about to graduate and you are not sure we are going to end up together. But I promise…’’

I started to shake my head uncontrollably again like a possessed person. “No! Obinna. Please! There is nothing to promise. Let’s just break up now. You know my parents are never going to let me marry an Igbo guy. You know that. So please! Let’s just break up now before I lose my mind any further!’’ My head was throbbing wildly but I was numb to the pain. The ache in my heart was all I could feel.

All of a sudden, Obinna grabbed both of my arms and shook me violently. “Funmike!’’ I was taken aback. His head was bowed now, so I couldn’t see his face. But when he finally raised his head, tears effortlessly rolled down his cheeks.

It was the first time in the past three and a half years I had been dating Obinna that I saw him cry. “Please, Olufunmike,’’ He suddenly pulled me in his arms and held me tightly like he was never letting go of me again. “I love you.’’

His voice was low and soft and it touched me in the depths of my heart. “so please, stay with me. When that time for confrontation comes we will sort things out. But for now, please, please…stay with me.’’

I felt helpless and before I knew it, I held on tightly to him too and buried my face deep in his chest. The tears that I fought so hard finally had their way.

Later that night, I tried my best to convince myself that Obinna and I were going to work somehow, that some kind of spirits were going to change my parents already made up mind.

But still, as I lay awake in bed at half past two in the morning, somewhere deep in my heart, I began to fear again that I was going to lose him. I began to fear again that my parents will never, on earth, allow their only daughter marry into an Igbo home.

That’s it guys! Hope you enjoyed it????
